3 Steps to Create the Confidence Your Basketball Athlete Deserves

As a seventh grader, I was a shy, skinny kid who barely got playing time on my middle-school

team.

Then, as an eighth grader, I got cut from my AAU team.

But the hits didn’t stop there: as a 9th grader I was devasted when I found out I didn’t make the team.

Fast forward to my sophomore year. I became the leading scorer on the varsity team, averaging

nearly 20 points per game.

What happened during that transition? Transformation.

Some people will credit growth in height, a shift in mindset, maturity, or luck. Those things may

have played a role, but there was a more specific reason I became a different player.

A specific formula not only changed my game but myself, from the inside out.

And it is the same formula that helps athletes at JP3 Training transform their development: a

Plan, a Promise, and a Pedigree.

Every athlete eventually grows in height. Many athletes mature. Opportunities will always be nearby, but not every athlete undergoes the transformation they ultimately want to see.

Here is what makes the difference.

A Plan

After seeing me frustrated, my dad showed me that I was not falling behind because I lacked

talent.

I was falling behind because I lacked structure.

My dad built himself from a high-school dropout into a nationally recognized attorney, so without

a doubt he understood what elite discipline, structure, and planning looked like.

That lesson changed how I approached basketball.

At JP3 Training, we give athletes a plan to guide their development. That includes a specific

approach to their pre-season, in-season, and off-season development.

Athletes need to know what they are working on, why they are working on it, and what progress

should look like over time. Their skill work, mindset work, and game preparation cannot be left to

chance.

A plan turns effort into direction.

And direction gives athletes a better chance to build real confidence.

A Promise

After my initial setbacks, I made a promise to myself: I would one day become one of the greatest

player’s in my school’s history and have my jersey retired in the rafters at my high school.

That promise was not simply about wanting better results. It was about developing an internal

motivation. To stop wishing and start wanting it with passion and desire.

This step is critical for any athlete who wants to maximize their talent.

At JP3 Training, our monthly mindset training helps athletes decide what they really want and

develop a specific motivation to achieve their goals. It helps them create a performance identity

that is stronger than one bad game, one setback, or one moment of doubt.

Confidence grows when athletes stop waiting for someone else to believe in them and start

keeping the promises they make to themselves. Every time I take my kids to see my jersey in the

rafters, I’m reminded of the promise that preceded it.

A Pedigree

Lastly, I had to get around greatness.

I needed to be associated with a proven program that had produced the type of results I wanted.

For me, that program was Tulsa Memorial High School. Their preparation helped me ascend to

a new level and gave me the daily sharpening I needed to transform.

Your athlete needs a pedigree, too.

Some sort of environment that serves as both measuring stick and step stool towards their goals.

A good high-school program is not always enough to get players where they want to go.

Every serious athletes trains outside of team practice in some form.

That is why it matters where they train.

At JP3 Training, athletes are surrounded by a proven development process, direct feedback,

and other athletes who are working toward the same goal. We have helped hundreds of athletes

ascend and reach new levels—from athletes trying to make a team to athletes moving from

starter to superstar.

The right pedigree raises the standard.

It gives athletes the feedback, follow-through, and fellowship they need to keep growing.

Confidence Is Created Through the Right Formula

Your athlete does not need to wait for more playing time, a different team, or a perfect season to

start building confidence.

They need a plan that creates direction.

They need a promise that keeps them connected to the work.

And they need a pedigree—a proven program that gives them the structure, feedback, and

opportunity to develop.

That is the JP3 difference.

Plan. Promise. Pedigree.

It is how we help athletes turn talent into the next-level skill and confidence that sets them apart.
